In Preschool we work really hard on letter recognition and begging sounds, knowing the letters of the alphabet at preschool age is related to both short and long term reading proficiency.  That is why we need to be giving children apple opportunities to experiment and practice using the alphabet. 

Create a Letter and Word Center

By providing alphabet materials it increases children's opportunities to engage in alphabet learning.  Include ABC Books, Magnetic Letters, Word Puzzles and ABC letter matching puzzles.

Small Group Activites

I feel that using hands on learning activities is the best way to teach my little ones these concepts.  When they are provided with hands on activities they enjoy the learning process and build on these skills easier. 

Clipping Beginning Sounds

Children use clothes pins to find the beginning sound on each beginning sound ring.

Beginning Sound Letter Match

Children use letter manipulative to match each beginning sound on the mat.

Beginning Sound Word Building

Children use letter manipulative to finish the beginning sound of each word. 

Coloring Beginning Sounds

Children need to be provided with coloring activities to build on their pre-writing skills.  These sheets can be used as a small group activity or taken home to build on the school to home learning.  You could also use them at the end of a unit for review and assessment.

Children will work on their cutting, glue and sorting skills.
