Day Twentytwo

When you incorporate a deep learning environment, you become more of a mentor and facilitator of knowledge rather than the dominant content expert.

What does digging deeper mean?

When digging deeper or (scaffolding) with young children the teacher needs to provide children with support and guidance when learning something new.
  • Challenge children to go a step further in their learning.
  • Provide children with multiple materials to represent their ideas and learning.
  • Guide children by asking questions and nudging children to explore concepts that build upon prior knowledge.
  • Use open-ended questions that help children connect ideas and use materials.
  • Challenge children to problem-solve by exploring and creating with materials.
Teaching with deep respect for children’s competencies requires you to engage your mind with theirs.   Learning Together with Young Children

As you begin to notice what is unfolding during children’s play and exploration you will begin to determine the support that will challenge them into a deeper study of learning.
In the book Learning Together with Young Children they suggest that you use the
“Yes and …” rule.

When responding to children we need to be responding to each invitation with
 “Yes and…”

in the video below I will give examples of how the "Yes and ..." rule works.
Conclusion:
When we want children to dig a little deeper in their learning we need to look closely at what they are doing.
  • Their actions
  • How they are exploring
  • Their words
As you watch and observe them you will discover ways to spark further investigations and challenge them in new ways.

Task:
Try using the YES and rule today in your classroom.

Come back tomorrow and share where the yes rule brought you and the children for the day.
