Burrr... It's been a little chilly around the artic poles this week. Group TimeWe started by reading and having a group discussions about the different kinds of polar animals and where they live. We sorted polar animals to the region that they live in. After reading the book about polar bears the children had some questions, so what better way to answer them then to do some hands on experiments. How does it help them swim? How does blubber keep them warm? Work Time (Learning Centers)We read about how tall Emperor penguins where and we had to see for ourselves. Children worked together to measure one another and see if they were taller or shorter than the Emperor penguin. Using the data sheet to record their findings. We need some snow to go with all of this polar living, so we busted out the test tubes and some instant snow. Children mixed and discover absorption as they made the snow. We added some salt and glitter to the sensory table for some snow sifting activities. Children worked with a small world polar activity. We sat out a try in the art center that was supplied with paper in colors of the animals, collage material, and picture cards of all the animals that we have been talking about. Children were not given directions just the opportunity to create. Polar Animals Life Science Unit
